It's a double standard for sure. Women have so much more freedom in the dress code than men, and I'm not only counting the skirt/dress option. Any office I've been at had women pushing the barrier while men just conformed. The double standard has to go.

The only reason that consultants 'must' wear suits for clients meetings is because consultants wear suits for client meetings. If we agreed as a culture that the whole business formal thing is idiotic, then we'd all be much better off, more productive, and more comfortable.

Fallacy of composition (well, sort of). If even one person can wear a suit to gain an edge, anyone else can. But then everyone will be wearing suits, and there is no edge, and everyone would have been better off with no suits.

However, suits are awesome so should be worn whenever possible. Most places are casual and to wear a suit would seem odd.

From an article I was just reading:

Quote:
Every day we pass by hundreds of people on the subway, in hallways, or on the streets, never saying a word. Yet despite the lack of verbal communication, decisions are being made as to the trustworthiness and intentions of those around you. Doubt this? Try wearing a ski mask and trench coat while gesturing wildly with your arms. In the 15 minutes you have before the police show-up, take note that despite not saying a single word your appearance has sent a message.

Yes, what I just said is unfair. Right now you may be thinking “Judge me not by my clothing, but by the integrity in which I live my life” – and I couldn’t agree more. But life isn’t fair, human beings have and will continue to judge others based on the information presented to them – and in most situations this is at first our physical appearance. Dress like a thug and people treat you like one; dress like a professional and you’ll have doors opened for you.

A Man’s Wardrobe

There are many things that we can’t control; the weather, the economy, the fact that college football needs a playoff system. How we present ourselves to strangers and new acquaintances, however, is not one of them. When you shake hands with a potential partner, they form an instant impression of you which is not easily dislodged. First impressions are powerful because until we begin to speak, they are the only bits of information we have to make a snap decision as to whether we like or trust someone. Countless communication studies have shown a man’s visual appearance is initially more powerful than what he says; ignore your wardrobe at your own risk.

IFYP

We're not all stupid.

I once worked in a business-formal office. I wore a suit every single day, except for like three days when I "pushed the barrier" by wearing a sweater set. I even kept my jacket on at all times, because since women don't wear ties, taking off your jacket = business casual. I hate double standards.

As for business casual, sometimes it's a problem within the written dress code. I interviewed at a company* once where the dress code was something like "men: shirts with collars and slacks or khakis; women: mixed separates." WTF? What are mixed separates? I'd say hoodies qualify.

*this company may or may not be located in Worcester MA

I am curious though. Will some people give examples of what they consider "over the line" for women in a business-casual environment? I know what I think is over the line, but I'd like to hear what others think.

Again, I don't care, but the things people bitch about the most in our office when they complain of the double standard are sleeveless shirts, sweats type materials or what are essentially fancy T-shirts.

Well, in general, a 45 year old chubby woman should reconsider the spaghetti strap tank top, but at the office that's a no no for anyone. It wasn't even a hot day. There are differing opinions on cleavage. Also differing opinions on whether or not black nylons make a skirt acceptable.

Dear PhildeTruth,

I have to admit that this is an excellent thread – you put it in a controversial way to keep it sticky at the top so that certain people that you desired to troll, by inserting certain key words that only they may understand, could notice it. Therefore, I believe this thread should be moved to the Non-Actuarial Topics.

For entertainment purposes, I am here to propose 2 possible justifications:

1. PhildeTruth actually wanted to make a convo with that woman/girl, but PhildeTruth naively put it in a GosuJohn’s tone. PhildeTruth meant to say, “Hi, I like your hoodie”, but he slipped “Do people actually think hoodie fits into the dress code?” Boooooom, that lady got offended and PhildeTruth started this thread to ask for a better pick up line.

2. There are some not-so-girly/manly women/girls, who wear hoodies a lot, at PhildeTruth’s office. PhildeTruth has always desired to troll – well, maybe he has made some good attacks - but most of the time he ended up being trolled. PhildeTruth started this thread to make another attack, because confronting them makes PhildeTruth uncomfortable.

PhildeTruth, please provide some satisfying answers, so that they may wear Abercrombie hoodies again and at the same time respond in a good manner. Whoops, I forgot you were zipped, like an Abercrombie hoodie, again.

Not one of the PhildeX family,

PhildeJoke
