Default EOM 1 memo, should I write it exactly as required?

I didn't really understand the difference between an Introduction and an Executive Summary so I had different sections than they recommended: Introduction, Data and Key Assumptions, Findings, Conclusion and Recommendations, and an appendix sort of section called "Discussion of data analysis in attached workbook".

I still passed, but maybe they didn't grade it.

An introduction is just like what you learned in English class. (If you were awake) It sets up the paper and outlines the intent and such. The executive summary is like a Cliff's Notes for the ENTIRE paper, hitting all key points that a reader should take away from the report.

Yeah I think I slept through that in English class.

Your explanation makes sense, however I found the task of writing an executive summary to my 4 page write up to be somewhat repetitive, like summarizing a summary. Also, I want executives who read my EOM1 memo to know something about the data and assumptions that I used, hence it seemed counter-intuitive to have the "data" section after the "executive summary" section.

The executive summary is there for the executives that have 30 seconds to read your report and get the jist of what you're talking about on their way to a meeting. It's meant to be redundant. The rest of the report is for when that same executive is stuck in an airport waiting for a delayed flight and is tired of playing Brick Breaker on his Blackberry.
