Default Military MRE

Saw some video clips about these on YouTube. Anyone has some real life experience?

Had it years ago while doing a long hike and setting up camp. Didn't watch the youtube, and really don't want to know what makes it what it is. I do remember it being A LOT BETTER than I possibly thought it would be.

I had three about 8 years ago. They were delicious. I was in a cooking class. One day, some soldiers came in and taught us about MRE's and how to cook them. I thought they were good. We were each given one, but some people thought they would be gross and gave them to me. So, I got three free meals!

One of my grandfathers spent a long time in the army reserves, and after he retired would still hang out with them, and get surplus stuff just because.

He once gave us a big box of MREs for no apparent reason. They were good. I remember one of them had a package of Reese's Pieces that totally surprised me. Looking at the wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meal,_Ready-to-Eat , that's not totally uncommon "Dessert or snack (often commercial candy, fortified pastry, or HOOAH! Bar)".

Generally decent, especially if you're hungry. I learned early on that buying a small bottle of tabasco was a great investment in increasing the palatability of some of the MRE (especially ones containing eggs).

Note that each one contains approx. 1,200 calories and generally very low in fiber. I haven't seen anyone get overweight from an MRE diet (in fact, I've seen many lose weight). Perhaps that Jenny chick or Weight Watchers should check this gig out.

BTW, those things are about 100,000,000 times better than C-rations. I've had those as well.

I've eaten more MRE's than I care to count between boot camp and all of the various field exercises.

At first, they are okay, but they get old fast. Pound cake was always a big winner though. I usually sold/traded my meals away for crackers, bread and peanut butter.

I will agree that they are better than you would expect, but after a few days of eating them, you're not getting too excited over it.

I have some in my garage- we take them camping occasionally. Hubby has probably eaten more than he would care to, but they're not bad.

1000x

MREs are, like some people have already said, surprisingly good. We'd take them on camping trips and stuff when I was young.

The C-rations? Awful.
