In case you needed instructions for rooting the EVO:

1) Visit http://unrevoked.com/ on your EVO and click to download. You will need to go to Settings --> Applications and check the box for Unknown Sources as the Unrevoked program is a non-market app.
2) Open the Unrevoked app.
3) Click the Start button.
4) That's it! No reboot or anything else necessary.

For the EVO:

Light tweaking
Switch the default from GSM to CDMA
I’m not entirely sure about this tweak. It seemed to work for me but a few of my buddies didn’t notice any difference. Apparently Android tells the phone to look for a GSM signal by default even though there isn’t a GSM radio in the phone and so you can save a few cycles by selecting CDMA only — or something like that. Give it a go. It’s easy to do and switch back if you notice any detrimental side effects.

The network app will get you access to these settings.

Just downloaded an app called SystemPanel. It was $3 but it definitely seems worth it. I've not delved too deep in, but you can see what programs are sucking CPU cycles and what is taking a toll on your battery. I am interested to see what is the major battery hit for me.

There is a light version but it doesn't have the monitor feature which would be the most interesting part for me. It is getting 5 stars from every reviewer. I think its the first app I've seen that has that.

I played with a Nook in B&N last weekend. Felt clunky to me. And after using the iPad, I don't know if I can do without a backlit screen. It's really nice not having to deal with a book light.

Do you know how many booklights you could buy with $350? Heck, you could hire a little kid to hold the light for you for $350.

A few things:

• The little kid suggestion sounds like a path to higher legal fees. That's all I'll say on that.
• Where do you attach a book light to a Nook?
• Booklight batteries are notoriously bad. I've gone through so many.
• Booklights generate more light than the iPad's screen, which bothers others in the room, car, train, plane, etc.
• It's convenient not having a 2nd object to tote. Yes, this is a First World problem.

Good points.

I'll knock the kid concern off my list since it would be my kid. Plus I've got twins, so when one gets tired, I'll just swap them out.
