What could possibly go wrong?

Now I remember why I don't use the stock ROMs. But, the custom ROMs all have idiosyncrasies of their own. I don't mind dealing with them, but she definitely will. Latest development: restored the nandroid backup I made before kicking this adventure off. The wifi is still broken. So many wasted hours over the last two days...

Just thought I'd share.
I googled "Samsung captivate wifi fix" and the first link said to go to wifi settings, hit menu, go to advanced, and set up static IP.

I would guess that Tasker could be set up to do this automatically for your home network while leaving others as DHCP.

That seems to have done the trick, thanks. There were so many threads where people complained about wifi issues on XDA it was overwhelming to try and find a solution. I would love to know what the actual issue is, though, so I could just fix it. Oh well, good enough for now.

This may or may not be related, but when I was on CM7 on my Evo, it would try to connect to my parents' router but could never complete the connection. Since I've been on AOKP's ICS, it connects instantly. Sometimes certain roms just have issues. My guess is it would go away if you switched roms for her. Of course (as you mentioned) it could create more issues.

You might have her check out ICS and see what she thinks. Here is a link to AOKP milestone 5. It is very stable in my use on my Evo. If you have a Captivate, you might try it out first. Also, Nandroid her before you upgrade her and then if she doesn't like it after a day or two, go back. My guess is that she will be fine.

I need to get a better handle on what the ICS options look like for our phones. I have been using the SGSICS ROM but it seems like they've stopped development and it can be sluggish at times and there are serious drawbacks, including a limit on the number of apps you can have without incurring force closes or random reboots. In the meantime, the number of ICS ROMs in the Captivate section of XDA has grown tremendously because a couple of "devs" are busy porting every ICS ROM that gets released in the SGS forum to the Captivate, I assume to try and encourage folks to donate to them. I don't really have any interest in using a barely supported ROM or rewarding those guys in any way. Somewhere in all that mess I know there are a couple of ROMs worth trying, but I haven't had time to sit down and figure it out.

This morning her laptop wouldn't connect to the router but she didn't realize it until I was already on my way to work. I picked a static IP for her phone that was pretty far above the ones that had been dynamically assigned so far on our system, and I know which IP her laptop had when I was working on this issue last night was not the same, so I don't think there's an IP conflict. But it'll give me some more things to work on this evening when I get home...

She did ask how old our phones were, and the implication was she might want to upgrade before too much longer. That's basically the opposite of what she has said ever since we got these phones. If so, I probably do not want to loose that deal. But we'll see...

AOKP seems to be leading the pack currently on ICS builds.

For sure. You can see on their page what the release dates for the various releases were and they were pumping out a build every 5 days or so and a milestone ever 1.5 months. Thousands of fixes between milestones. You can also find unofficial builds on wikirootz for devices not on their official list.

Definitely through Sprint.

Don't know if the guy on the phone didn't know the difference between the Wimax coverage and the LTE coverage - or let slip that they'll be lighting up Chicago's LTE soon...

Either way, I've got the Clear 4G hot spot - so I won't lose any speed until the LTE is lit up.

LG Optimus touch screen stopped working today. Not taking notice of any input through the screen at all. Hardware buttons seem to be responding normally, just not the screen. Rebooted a couple times (via battery removal), no luck. Haven't had anything happen to the phone lately, so dunno why this is going on. Phone is a bit over a year old. Grr.
