I think we're really going to see an explosion of Android phones in the low end of the market and potentially the enterprise. I think that is the bigger threat to Windows, RIM and Symbian.

It's also important not to over-read market share. In many ways, it's a meaningless metric. The Android market share has to be divvied up over a lot more players than Apple's.

Really, at the end of the day it's about volume x profit per unit. Apple doesn't have to win the volume game to come out ahead in that equation.

But I think the market share trends definitely reveal that MS is being penalized for sitting out so long.

For Apple and especially Google, their focus may not be just HW / SW profit. It is the advertisement market that they are after! How did Google make money?

They make money from advertisement, a very special one, i.e. advertisement that is based on analytic. With the GPS on smartphone, they can tell exactly where we are. Do you think soon or later we may see ad on our smartphone around 11 am about the lunch special from the Chinese restaurant just across the street? or when we attend the SOA meeting in Florida, we receive ad about the warehouse sale which is only 5 minutes walk from our hotel? Do you think I am dreaming? or do you think this is a big $$$ market that both Google and Apple are fighting for?

It's big. Probably bigger than we know right now. We'll have virtual ads within virtual economies in no time. Wait, I think we might be there now.
