Default Why is the "Actuarial Bookstore" in middle of nowhere, South Dakota?

Town of Mobridge, SD

Should we actuaries make a pilgrimmage to this town? Is it a holy place for actuaries? What makes it desireable to use this location as opposed to rural areas closer to say

Shaumburg, Illinois?

or upstate New York?

Texas?

Actuarial Bookstore Location is where?:
Mobridge, South Dakota (couldn't be farther from population anywhere in the country)---very peaceful place

in the middle of a Sioux Reservation on a fishing town....

*Wish I could backpack out there, miles from civilization. Then I promise to bring you back loads of actuarial books. You won't have to pay shipping thanks to me. And I can solve actuarial equations under a South Dakota campfire. The magic bookstore.

Might be simply the corporation headquarters. SD and DE are states with advantageous corporation regulations.

I don't think I need to plan a life-altering event such as a pilgimmage.

The place is on an Indian reservation. Obviously, Chief Actuary likes it there.

So they can justify to themselves shipping charges of $250 for packages sent to Canada.

I heard the CPA Bookstore is in St. Louis, but they claim its so much harder to get there than South Dakota.

If you still needed a reason to stockpile canned food, now you have it.

I assume the people who run it wanted to live there. Corporate headquarters? Nah, this is maybe a 2 person operation with temp labor when the syllabi come out.

Other reasons are:

1. Look at a UPS/Fedex ground map and think real hard.
2. Cheap property/labor.

Same reasons the companies that outsource insurance administration are all in Nebraska.

I have been to the Holy Land.

Probably can't find cheaper Real Estate in the US. And a pretty beautiful area on the Missouri River. Anyone of means can live the ShebaPoe lifestyle there, absent the hot FSU chicks.
