Default Bit Parts

Flipping channels this weekend I stumbled over the movie "In Search of a Golden Sky." The movie sucked but it had two good bit-part movie actors as the stars, Buck Flower and Charles Napier.

Now Buck Flower has done everything from family drama like the above mentioned piece of dreck to soft-porn like the quality film from 1974 "Alice Goodbody." Usually her plays drunks or bums.

The ST nerds out there should recognize Charles Napier. I found it interesting that according to IMDB.com he has nearly 200 acting credits.

So, who are some of your favorite successful bit actors?

To qualify for the distinction of successful bit actor:
- over 50 credits on IMDB.com
- never nominated for a major award (nomination makes you a lowe level star, not a bit actor)
- not considered a lead actor

p.s. If you are curious at all about "In Search of a Golden Sky" it is a family drama about 3 orphaned kids trying to avoid foster homes. It is bland and fairly dull. Something to watch for, at the end the reunion hug between the oldest daughter and an adult male relative is creepy, that relationship doesn't look platonic.

I wanted to say Clint Howard but I see he won an MTV Lifetime achievement award. Though his IMDB bio says up to that time the award was considered a joke by the crew and I really don't see how awarding it to him really changes that.

I think he is just above the bit actor level. He has starred in a couple of things. If you look at most of his career I think he fits the bill.

Looking over his profile he's a good fit. Looks like the only regular job was on the George Wendt show.

His profile says he was offered a role in Animal House. I wonder what that would have done for his career.

How close is your definition of bit parts to a character actor?

Pretty close. Character actors can be famous and that is the distinction I was trying to make. Steve Buscemi is considered a character actor but his presence in a film is good enough for me to give it a look. A Bit part actor is probably a character actor but he never pulls the attention from the core movie.

Thomas Wilson just misses. His credit for being Biff from Back to the Future makes him too much of a star.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is the group of actors that made somewhat of a living over many years without ever becoming famous. No big paychecks no name recognition outside of the casting office. It is tough to find them without stumbling upon them.

So really you are looking for good actors that no one has ever heard of?
