Great idea. We also now have our first case study.

I agree that the post by SOA's president seemed unprofessional.

I think, in the interest of not stirring up more than I already have, I'll use something different as my examples....

So, what are we to think of our SoA President when he has "sympathetic" thoughts towards Blago. Mclaughlin, after all, is still President of the SoA with 2+ years left on our Board. I hope we're not going to hear next that Blago is his role model.

It could all be innocent, of course - a spur of the moment thoughtless tweet from Chicagoland where the story is undoubtly getting a lot of play. But, it is still disturbing.

Here's an idea --- The SoA Annual meeting in 2011 is in Chicago. The Blago trial will, probably, still be going on and Blago will, probably, still be in need of money. Maybe we can line him up as our keynote speaker and get some professionalism CPD.
Awesome post, Tom. I

Also, sympathy != empathy. You feel empathy for someone when you've been there and know how it feels. I'm glad he didn't say that.
One does not have a lot of opportunity to put things in context in a tweet. Therefore, one ought to be very careful when using that mode of communication.

As has already been pointed out, if you are personally messaging a few close friends, that "context" allows much more liberty. Taking a tweet like that out of context would be wrong and probably misleading.

But, in this case, the SoA President was tweeting as the SoA President to a large public group and his message is available even to those of us not on Twitter. In that context, it seems McLaughlin should have used a little more discretion.

It's a good question. I also don't think it should necessarily be expected that all SOA presidents use Twitter.

But I think an official SOA Twitter handle to announce events, site updates, news, etc. is not a bad idea though. It's simply a form of promotion at its most basic level. It's pretty much what the rest of the world is doing.

Spoiler:
I know we're not the rest of the world here.

Like the girl I took to prom, I have cut Sir Mike out of the photo of me accepting my FSA certificate.

His signature on my certificate, well, that's another matter.
