Default Dave Farber's 2010 Manual, Problem 11

Dave -

One question on this problem, re: final regs. For FT and NC purposes, do we have to incorporate the partial accrual of the pre-retirement death benefit (participant has 7 years of service, and the pre-retirement death benefit is after 10 years)?

Yeah, I thought that was odd also.

Me 3. I've always pro-rated benefits in situations like this, though I don't know the regulations for single EERs.

Yes, this was an unintended consequence of this question. Let's just change the data so that there is no pre-retirement death benefit, and that should solve the problem that you are struggling with, since there is not enough information to deal with the death benefit otherwise. With that change, the solution should work as it is written.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything

Your questions in general are really helping me work through some of the bizarro situations that I never have to deal with at work.

I may have a few more questions before Friday (I hope to finish every problem in your manual by then).

You're going to go from problem 11 (or 10, whatever it was) through the whole book by Friday?

I'm in the mid 70s now. Doing 15-20 each way on my commute (took this morning off to doze) and 15+ in the evening at home.

Thursday and Friday are full study days.

I've already gone through the manual taking notes and working only a handful of problems, then skipped back to the beginning to work them all.

(I failed this thing by 1 point last year, and didn't seem to really forget much, so most of my work is going to focus on the topics I didn't know at all last year).

I think that real life issues actually can tend to be more bizarro than the exam questions.

It's quick reading from that point on.
