Default Progressive sues to have car monitor patents declared invalid

Progressive just sued to have several Hughes patents covering OBDII mounted data loggers with wireless communication declared invalid. If they succeed, then there will be fewer patents out there that insurers developing UBI products need to worry about. More here http://bit.ly/ProgressiveDJaction

Why do you use bit.ly? I don't like it because I don't know where it's going to take me.

As far as I can tell, Progressive's stake in this is on the side of willful patent infringement. It's not about stifling competition. It's not like they're manufacturing the boxes and competing with Hughes.

Another reason to use FireFox. See <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10297/>.

That's pretty slick. I'm using Chrome. I'm surprised they don't have the same add-on, yet.

Are you saying they shouldn't be filing this suit?

No, they're trying to protect themselves from Hughes saying that Progressive was using Xirgo boxes even though they knew that Hughes may have a case for patent infringement against Xirgo.

It's like if I owned a car rental agency and I knew Government Motors was suing Toyoda Motors for patent infringement, but I bought a fleet of Toyodas because they're economically the better choice. I don't want Government Motors to take my fleet away 3 years after when the suit is over. I can't wait that long; I need cars now.
