They "vet" the apps - but given the amount of submissions and turn around time - it's hard to say how much polish (or protection) Apple is really giving. Granted, it's giving the illusion of doing full diligence, which has value in the market (and will be fine until it blows up).

Google isn't nearly as interested in having polished apps on Android.
1.) Once again, they're very interested in having polished apps - they work very hard to have the best apps out there.
2.) You have a governance argument. Which is the better way to insure quality - let the market work, or have a "government" enforce standards. Google is more on the free market. Developers have an interest on having quality apps.

Most of the Android only apps I have, the developers have been interested in putting out quality apps. ADW is certainly doing that with the flexibility in how everything looks.

Agree. But hardware still matters. People want things that look good, feel good, work reliably, etc.
Essentially, computers become appliances. In refrigerators, it's assumed that they'll do the basics (freeze and chill food). It's a different set of parameters than currently exist, where the hardware dictates what you can do.

All the food appliance analogies are funny. Not sure about Android, but I know that the old Win Mobile custom ROM compilers were called "kitchens" too. I learned that several years ago when I put a hacked version of WM6 on my XV6700.

I think I'm past the point in my life when I like to hack around with ROMs though. I like turnkey tech, which looks like turkey tech. Enough on this.

They're probably happy to let me drown in my own gravy boat.

First post from my Cr-48!

Initial impressions are that its pretty awesome. Thinner than my net book but two inches more screen real estate. I think the hard ware got an unnecessarily bad wrap. But I don't review a hundred machines a month so what do I know.

Set up was a breeze but the system updates took longer than I expected. My mouse installed instantly. Did they just load all major drivers on here already? That was impressive. The keyboard is a little wacky. Lots of space between the keys and no navi buttons like end, home, page up.

Am I the only one that got one so far? I need an AO foil.

I'm wondering if they are doing a similar thing with things like mouse drivers that they are doing with the print drivers for cloudprint.

Can't wait to see if my CR-48 arrives soon. My dev browser at home is still popping up that you can sign up to test a Chrome notebook so maybe that means they are still available.
