Default Is being old really that miserable?

I saw a documentary on hulu called "The Way We Get By", its basically about these 3 old people greeting US troops as they come from their tours of duty.

It's a touching story, but it just seems that when you get old, you 1. deal with constant physical pain 2. get traumatized by everything and 3. watch a lot of infomercials at 3 AM.

Wheres the ?

The Economist just had an article claiming that happiness reaches a nadir at an average age of 46 (IIRC), and then it's all rainbows and unicorns after that.

When I get old it's gonna be all about hookers and Viagra, a Rascal, all you can eat buffets, and black socks up to the knees. It's gonna be awesome. Hope none of you a-holes were thinking about driving more than 50 in the left lane, erose has a bingo game to get to and I ain't in no hurry.

My parents and in-laws are still happy. My dad was happy until the day he died at age 80. My mom's happy at 71. My in-laws are happy at 65 and 66. Even with leukemia. I think it's the well-lived life and (especially) the grandkids.

When you say "happiness reaches a nadir at" does that mean happiness is lowest at?

Yes, right about the "mid-life crisis".

Sometimes you get constant pain at a much earlier age, too!

Hey, life happens. Deal.
