Unless you are extremely gifted you would probably end up grinding a low to mid limit game and making $30-$80k a year without benefits. I.E. worse then being an actuary.

You wouldn't have to put up with an office and a boss, but poker grinding really sucks too.

I did it in college when that was the best way I could make money. Its actually really good in conversation with a lot of actuaries and financial types, seen as a positive. Its also good with the ladies, certainly gives you a more interesting light then boring office drone.

no poker conversation is really good with anyone else but a poker player. most of the poker conversations i have are: "how do you get your money offline??" "can you teach me?" "if i give you 500 bucks can you double it?" And those are from actuaries, l o l.

tend to agree with the last sentence though, esp. in vegas.

It has helped a couple people get interviews at my company (by having pro poker player on resume). But then again, I was in charge of reviewing the resumes. Probably not the norm.

My brother almost has being a +EV poker player as a requirement to get a job for his trading company. He considers the skillset 100% transferable to HFT.
