Seriously though, on the resume, I may focus in on the objective/summary portion. You will have to convince the firm that you are committed and exams are really the only way to do it.
lol how did I miss this? well done, sir

But I do think that any attempts to put poker on a resume will read to the interviewer like this.

Poker playing is not a valued skill for 99.87% of the hiring managers and decision makers.

When you say aim for those areas, are those part of the actuarial process, or just another type of job in general? I'm having a hard time thinking of other things to do with a math degree as a backup besides doing the Actuary route (definitely don't want to be a teacher). But, depending on when/if poker comes back, you can make an "easy" 50-100k a year playing a lower level...it just doesn't provide the stable wages+benefits. I figured Actuary was a good route because I love math/problems, paid better/rated better than anything else, etc. However, people saying they are having hard time getting jobs/having no life is a little stressful when you haven't even started; but see the time commitment. Grass greener on the other side?

Also, wanted to get into learning to trade and other possible hobbies, but like you said, I would probably have to put it on hold. Just always had the dream of getting "rich" with a stable job, and adding things like poker for residual income. Maybe I should just stay in my low-cost of living area and be like the rest of the world
Bumping this because it was at the end of the page and more will hopefully see it and opinionate.

I am very confident that I passed MFE. I did not have much success searching for a job, but I definitely dropped the ball a bit. I started a new romantic relationship in September and between that, studying for MFE, and looking for a job, the latter was last in line. I did not get any nibbles for the ten or so jobs that I did apply for (which was a bit discouraging), however I did make some contacts in the actuarial field that I can follow up with. Unfortunately I can't update my resume indicating that I passed MFE until I get my results in January.

So for my next move I'm debating between:

1. taking MLC in April and aggressively trying to find a job in the meantime through networking, possibly an internship, etc

2. start cramming right now to take C in February with the goal of having all the prelims knocked out by April

3. some other option that I am not considering

As always, your advice is appreciated.

1 is better than 2, since I doubt you'll want to spend all of the holidays cramming for what people generally feel is one of the hardest prelims. Also, 3 exams is a great amount to have while looking for an entry-level job.

I'm not sure what your geographic restrictions are, but your best bet is to work on networking and send your resume everywhere. Not sure if it's been suggested yet in this thread, but directly emailing actuaries using their contact information from the SOA directory is a good way to bypass HR filters. I'm sure going 3/3 with prelims in 6 months will catch the eyes of employers. Work on your interviewing skills so that once you get one, you make sure you get the job.

Good luck!

Dr T Non-Fan,

Yes I readily admit that I slacked the last few months looking for a job. I got discouraged and felt (perhaps wrongly) that my background and only P and FM did not give me much hope. I know that this is the wrong attitude. This was in combination with the new relationship and falling behind on my MFE studying. I also have a rather serious hobby in the sport of olympic weightlifting that I train 15 or so hours a week at, in case anyone was wondering what else I was spending my time on.

Apply to more places...now. Put "Awaiting Results" for MFE on the resume...apply to more places. Start studying for your next exam if you so desire...apply to more places.

You're not unmarketable with 2 exams (you become a strong candidate with 3). But, limiting the number of places you apply and the locations of the places you apply seriously decrease the prob that one of them will get back to you. 10 applications is nothing. Get out there. Also, remember the length of unemployment can hinder your chances of landing a job, so consider looking for a job to show companies that you are employable.
