Default Unemployment Insurance Question

My wife's place is talking seriously about layoffs. If she were to volunteer to be one of the ones axed, that wouldn't impact her eligibility for benefits, right?

My fiancee is in HR and deals with this a lot. They have had people who quit (no chance of being laid off) and have gotten benefits extended for a couple months and a severance and/or unemployment insurance.

It can't hurt to ask.

She'll just need written proof that they won't fight her unemployment claim.

Just be aware severance may not be as generous as you think it is, some companies pay you your gross for for the X weeks/year of service, others subtract your unemployment from that total.

There's no chance of that other stuff, I just want to make sure if they decide there will be layoffs and she says "oh, hey, I'll take that", that she won't be denied unemployment. I'll pass along that she get the written confirmation.

From what she's told me, they don't give severance. She's planning to quit her job when we get kids, she hates her job, and I make enough to cover us. So it's a win all around if she can get out a little bit early and collect some unemployment until the kids come along.

Sounds like it'll be a win. Usually companies are eager to work with employees who volunteer for things like this. Makes their life easier.

So reduced government spending is only ok when you can't get it.

Now is a time for her to slowly take small things like pencils, note pads, chairs, filing cabinets, bathroom fixtures...because what are they gonna do? Fire her?

Meh. I'm not going to turn down my Social Security check when I turn 80, either.
