Default What do you guys think about an MBA degree?

Know anyone who has one? Do they think it paid off? Not for actuarial careers, just in general.

I know it's not something most actuarials would pursue so there's probably not a lot of personal experience here...but for people you know who have attained this degree or if you have a general sense of how it is received in the corporate world.

TIA!

I think it's a good idea for a donkey who wants to get ahead in a company. You learn a decent level of skills, have a much faster, easier track than an actuary and can end up with a similar level of compensation/responsibility.

A lot depends on your corporate culture. In some companies (the "old" GMAC), you needed an MBA to move up. A crappy one was better than none at all.

I think if the MBA is obtained to switch companies / industries, one of the best reasons to get it is for the contacts you make (if at a good school).

By itself, the MBA is like most degrees; it is what you make of it.

MBA holders are known as "big donkeys". Big donkeys often direct other donkeys, but never quite figured out that studying the same stuff as other donkeys just means they all think the same way.

Of course, the idea that you can learn business in a school is funny too, but big donkeys take it very seriously. At the top of the donkey race, right where I'm throwing barrels (check my sig) big donkeys often take care of each other. Some big donkeys get quite wealthy when other big donkeys hire them to run big companies.

So, an MBA will change your hee haw into a HEE HAW! is it worth it? I say no.
