Default What IYO opinion accounts for the "bamboo ceiling"?

accent/grammar ceiling?

rappor-with-established-management-problem ceiling?

non-physical-appearance factors?

other?

I may or may not have opinions of my own, but am genuinely curious, especially about the opinions of posters who qualify as "established-management"?

Thx.

Racism, but not totally in a purposeful manner. It's just white people prefer to be around other white people and to have to have white people as their bosses. It's mostly subconscious. And there's no social pressure to include Asians in management ranks like there is with Hispanics and Blacks.

Does the "bamboo ceiling" apply to all those with any Asian descent, or only those that still act culturally "Asian" instead of "American"?

I think it's an accent/culture thing. IMO those born or largely raised in America face less of a bamboo ceiling.

Definitely accent/culture, and this applies to a lot of other places of origin. Mainly ALL of Asia. Former USSR states, Pakistan, India, Iran, Iraq, Armenia, etc.

Some Asians don't get down-home American jokes. Most of them involve plays on words, which cannot be understood unless a lot of Americanish English is learned. Then, often they think you're laughing at them instead of the joke.

There is definitely not a smile deficit in my workplace among Asians (almost all Chinese or Chinese-American). That's kind of new to hear.

Smile at white people, not each other.

Yeah, at my office there is definitely the Chinese clique. They all talk to each other in Chinese, even about business, which I think is pretty unprofessional. I'll hear my coworker on the phone (in Chinese) "blah blah blah assets blah blah blah AXXX reserve blah blah blah mortality"

I think one would be best off to speak English all the time, and mingle with non-bamboo types.
