1998: 51000 attended the MLS Cup at Rose Bowl to see Chicago vs DC United. Yes, it seats slightly less than 100000 these days (obesity epidemic forced relignment of bench seat numbers). But that's over twice more than what the Galaxy averaged that year at the Rose Bowl.

People will come to LA, see lots of other things, schedule Disneyland and Getty Center around the MLS Cup. Maybe not Toronto in late November.

I was looking at the 2 DC finals, as well as the 2 at Foxborough.

Not sure where you got your numbers, but the ones from vivi's post are different.

I'm getting mine from wiki. Must be true.

1. I agree that a lot more people show up when the host team plays. Those two games (1997 and 2002) also happen to be in much larger stadia. If Columbus were in an MLS Cup final at home hosted at their stadium, there would still be only 21000 in attendance, because that's all that fits there. So, the higher regular-season point-earner becoming host team being the does not automatically imply a larger crowd.

2. So, I ignored those two games and used 1996, 1999, 2000, and 2007 to show that more people show up to those MLS Cup finals than show up for regular season games. I can add Seattle in 2009 as well.

In summary, the MLS Cup should be played in a large, neutral-site field every time, in order to generate a large crowd.
