Negative stars for any remake that isn't immediately recognized as light years better than the original.

agreed, though I will also accept some if

1) attempting to get closer to the original source material
2) taking a foreign movie and making it more accessable for a general English speaking audience

moonrise kingdom - ****

the only other wes anderson film i've seen is royal tenenbaums and i hated it, but this movie was brilliant. i think his brand of quirkiness works better for me when kids are delivering the lines. also the way anderson sets up scenes is very engrossing (the opening credits, the tree house, the breakfast table, etc.)

The way they film the interior of Bill Murray's house...

Really. I only recently saw Royal Tenenbaums and I loved it. Didn't think I would.

i saw it when it first came out (over ten years ago...gosh) so it's possible my movie tastes have morphed over the years. moonrise kingdom really won me over so i'm gonna go back in his catalog and watch some of his older films that i missed (the people i went with told me to see the life aquatic).

Something about that gentleman's movies makes my skin itch. They make me feel like I'm in a room getting steadily, not-quite-perceptibly smaller.

Life Aquatic is my favorite of his movies, but Royal Tennebaums is really great too I think. His style takes a bit to get used to, I think, but there is a lot to it.

Life Aquatic was my least favorite of his movies, but I like them all quite a bit. And he should have cast Pagoda from Royal Tenenbaums as one of the crew on the boat in Life Aquatic.
