If once a man indulges himself in murder, very soon he comes to think little of robbing; and from robbing he comes next to drinking and Sabbath-breaking, and from that to incivility and procrastination. Of course, that is why the situation is so difficult. We must be extreme in dealing with those responsible.
At the same time, we must be moderate to show that our aim is justice, and not blind revenge and retaliation (which would neither serve to defend liberty or effect justice.)
