Default Battle of the Bands VII

Welcome to the seventh edition of the Battle of the Bands! Subject your fellow AOers to your favorite music! Win valuable bragging rights! Be the donkey-headed adversary of humanity!

Rules

The submitted band must have charted no albums on the Billboard 200 or its precursor charts. There are no chart restrictions on the songs themselves. Songs by eligible bands are allowed to have charted on any Billboard chart. The songs may also have appeared on charting compilation albums, such as movie soundtracks. (See wild cards below.)

Cover songs are allowed. However, cover songs are eligible based on the highest charting band to have recorded that song. The original version of a song is not subject to this rule. (See Round 2 below.)
Spoiler:
An example using a previously submitted song: The song Popcorn has been recorded by charting bands such as Hot Butter and Crazy Frog. The original version, recorded by Gershon Kingsley, could be submitted considering only Kingsley’s chart history. All other versions of this song would be restricted based on the Top 50 placement of Crazy Frog, even though that’s not the best known version of the song. The general idea is that a cover of one unknown band’s song by another shouldn’t be disallowed.

Spoiler:
Covers include song parodies, but samples don't count as covers, no matter how extensive.

Bands must not have been submitted to a previous Battle of the Bands. (See Round 6 below.)

As a guideline, submit songs from 1950 or later. As a requirement, a recording must be associated with a performer, not with a composer or a band leader, as often happened in the pre-rock era.

There is no limit to the number of players, but only one screen name per actual person playing.

Spoiler:
Songs must meet eligibility for all credited artists, following Billboard rules. If an artist is credited on the album's song list, normally with a word like "featuring" or "with", then the song counts as a song for both artists. Uncredited appearances don't count. A song credited to "William Shatner featuring Ben Folds" is different from a William Shatner song where Ben Folds plays the piano.

An artist or band recording under a different name counts as the main artist. For example, when the B-52's recorded (Meet) The Flintstones for the Flintstones movie soundtrack, they were credited as the BC-52's. That still counts as a B-52's song.

Remixes are allowed.

Wild Cards

You can submit a band that has charted on the Billboard 200 by using a wild card. There are three wild cards, based on previous rounds of the competition. You may use each wild card once.

Lipman Wild Card: The band may have charted on the Billboard 200, but no higher than #101. There are no additional restrictions on the song.
Punman Wild Card: The band may have charted on the Billboard 200. The song must not be from an album that charted on the Billboard 200. The song must not have charted on a Billboard song chart.
Vividox Wild Card: The band may have charted on the Billboard 200, but no higher than #51. The song must not have charted higher than #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 or its precursor charts.

In other words, the no charting band rule is only required for three of the six weeks.
Spoiler:
You can use wild cards to enable the submission of cover songs. For example, to submit a band that hasn’t charted covering a song that was recorded by a band whose highest chart placement was #180, you could use the Lipman wild card. It’s possible that you could use two wild cards on one song.

Spoiler:
The wild cards can be used to submit obscure songs by a well known band, or hit songs by bands that didn’t chart highly. These submissions are allowed, just like songs from compilation albums are allowed. However, several players have shown an inclination to vote less for songs that are “too well known.” Submit at your own risk.

Rounds

There are six rounds. Each round will run two weeks, from Monday to the following Sunday. Three rounds are open, and three rounds have themes.

Round 1: Open
Round 2: Cover Songs
You must submit a cover song originally performed by, or also covered by, a band that has charted on the Billboard 200, prior to the recording of your cover. At the host's discretion, a cover of a well-known song that doesn't meet this criterion will be allowed.
Round 3: Open
Round 4: Word To Your Mother
You must submit a song whose title or lyrics includes one of these words, graciously contributed by fellow AOers:
Between, submitted by Bicycle Repair Man
Dog, submitted by ao fan
Spoiler:
Also allowed: puppy. Also allowed: words based off the verb dog, like dogs, dogging, dogged, doggedly. Not allowed: dawg. (Yo dawg.)

Foot, submitted by campbell
Spoiler:
Also allowed: feet and compound words using foot or feet, such as footstep, footprint, and football.

Listen, submitted by frummie
Spoiler:
Also allowed: listening, listens, listened, etc.

Samples of song lyrics count, provided they are identifiable and verifiable. Samples of speeches, movie dialogue, and the like won't count.

Round 5: Open
Round 6: Other People’s Bands
You must submit a song recorded by a band previously submitted in any Battle of the Bands, including this one. This band must not be a band for which you’ve ever submitted a song.
Spoiler:
The use of the wild cards should help allow submissions from any past contest. However, bands are subject to their current charting history. For example, Skrillex and Young the Giant have now charted in the Top 50, impacting their eligibility for this contest.

Submissions

Please e-mail songs to rowerewolf (at) gmail (dot) com. Please submit songs in .mp3 format. If you’re submitting a song in any other format, do so early, so that I can try to convert it.

Please include the following information with your submission:
Band Name
Song Name
Songwriter credits
Album name and release date
Wild card used, if any

If multiple people want to submit a band, the earliest submission gets to use it. (An exception will be made for Round 6. The same band can be submitted multiple times, but not the same song.)

Please submit songs by the Friday before the round begins. If songs are submitted in a timely fashion, they will be posted Sunday night to Google docs.

Voting

Each round, you will have votes equal to the number of songs submitted. You may cast up to 4 votes per song. The maximum number of songs you can vote for in a round is 2X/3, rounded up, where X is the number songs submitted that round.

Anyone may listen and vote, even if you don't submit songs. Please do not vote with more than one screen name.

Votes are due by Sunday at 6 PM EST/EDT.

Schedule

Round 1: starts February 13
Round 2: starts February 27
Round 3: starts March 12
Round 4: starts March 26
Round 5: starts April 9
Round 6: starts April 23

I like the music video to that song. Well, I like the song too, but the music video is real nice.
