I think a lot of it has to do with Apple's retail presence. Competitors have nothing like the Apple Store.

App development is also a big factor. The gap between iPad app selection and Android tablet app selection is much, much wider than the gap between the iPhone and Android phones.

Finally, I think simplicity rules. Apple focuses on a single form factor with only a handful of options. Android tablets are all of the map. They arrive and disappear just as quickly. Marketing is a lot more fragmented and diffused for Android tablets.

I've seen strangers using tablets 3 times now. In all cases they were ipads, and they were playing Angry Birds. My suspicion is that people buy the ipad because they had Angry Birds on their iphone and they want a bigger screen.

That's some sound actuarial extrapolation.

he may not be too far off the mark. people tend to buy more computer (in whatever form) than they really need. i don't come close to taxing the limits of my $300 home laptop and i know i'm not the exception to the rule. marketing, baby

With equal soundness, the last time I was in for an eye exam, the opthamologist was very proud of his new iPad and *really* wanted me to be impressed with it. As he sat next to a desk with keyboard and monitor, he showed me how he could work with patient records right from the iPad in his lap. I just nodded and made impressed sounds.

For any popular item, there will be those who purchase the item purely for status, but that incident just tickled my funny bone.

Somehow I don't think the rapid deployment of iPads in the medical field is being done purely for status.

The ones being held in the laps of practitioners perched next to a functioning desktop are.

I am a big MS fan myself but the number of Windows machines are dropping and number of Apple products are increasing. I wonder when I would see executives in insurance industry are holding an iPad in the insurance conference.
The CEO and CFO of my health insurance company take their Ipads to every meeting.

Verizon and Sprint didn't have iPhone until recently. T-Mobile still doesn't have it with 3G. And there are no comparable Android tablets, and no one except Google can be trusted to release software updates for their Android devices. The $399 Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play store is really enticing, but I'm going to wait for the next release of iPhone and Google's Android phone to update my phone.
