Sorry for laughing...
If you are ok with handwavy stuff it doesn't take a lot. If you are like me you would want to learn Quantum Field Theory and the Standard Model... The Standard Model is thought to not be fundamental. And then you would need to understand why people think there must be something like the Higgs, even if the Standard Model is wrong. This last part is not that hard. A lot of free lectures.

This is really, really big news!
...as long as these scientists don't pull a Roberts on us tomorrow. "We are sorry to announce that we are only 99.98% certain that we've found the Higgs boson." Thousands of scientists thrust down their clipboards in disgust. And CNN changes their headline to "Higgs Boson Killed."
