so..let me under this right. WE are supposed to slave away every day for years only that one day we are given a promotion and all that hard work pay off for that moment. Then we go forward and repeat. That is the way things are to be successful?

You make it sound like every moment of trying to earn your promotion is miserable. If that's the case, you're doing it wrong. Either you need a different career, a different job within the same career, or a more satisfying personal life; perhaps several of the above. Unlike a stock, you can't get capital gains at the end of your life by selling it, so you'd better be getting a steady stream of dividends as you go along, or you're getting nothing.
