According to the article, the distribution of Americans intend to keep their cars for these lengths of time. What about actuaries?
3 to 5 years - 3% 6 to 7 years - 4% 8 to 10 years - 15% 10+ years - 35% Until it dies - 43% Replace your car soon or drive it until it dies? By Tara Baukus Mello · Bankrate.com Wednesday, July 25, 2012 Posted: 6 am ET Americans have no plans to replace their cars every few years, even if the economy is fine, according to a survey by AutoMD.com, a free auto repair website owned by US Auto Parts Network. Just three percent of the more than 4,000 car owners surveyed said they plan to replace their car every three to five years, and just four percent pegged buying a replacement at six to seven years. A whopping 78 percent of those surveyed said that they would keep their car "more than 10 years or until it dies," while the remaining 15 percent of owners said they'd replace their cars every eight to 10 years. I had my 95 Escort for 200,000 miles and 15 years. I would have kept it longer, but I got a newer car for free, so I gave the Escort to a young couple in my church that had just gotten married and needed a second car.

I'm currently driving a vehicle acquired new in 2003. I'll probably hold onto it for at least two more years.

I expect that at around 10 years I'll feel like i'm driving a super old car and it'll be time to upgrade, plus, I expect cars in 10 years to be pretty kick ass

Hasn't the average length of ownership now nearly doubled? I was researching this the other day, I want to say the average length of ownership was 38 months in the early 2000's and its hovering around 78 months right now I think.
The car loan data is not bad to look over too. |
