Default Red Tails -- not just a bad movie

OK, this is a little late since the movie was released early this year and I only watched it because I got a free movie certificate from Dish. This was the movie about the black fighter pilots in WWII known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Those pilots are definitely heroes and their story deserves telling.

There were plenty of horrendous reviews online -- basically it sucked as a war movie or any movie. Fine. But none of them brought up the issue that jumped out at me the entire movie: Why was it necessary to elevate the Tuskegee pilots by denigrating the service of every white fighter pilot? Can't they just be heroes in their own right? At any number of points in the movie, white fighter pilots were depicted as incompetent, undisciplined glory-seekers. They would abandon their bombers to go chase German planes to get credit for kills. Or they would get lost and just not show up to provide air cover. To listen to the story, the Air Force was simply unable to get its thousands of white pilots to do their job and therefore turned to the few hundred Tuskegee pilots to achieve success with the bombing campaign.

It just seems odd that creating a new racial stereotype to redress an old one gets no comment at all. Any combat pilot in WWII measured his lifespan in weeks or months. It's hugely insulting to categorize their service as incompetent glory hogs.

Haven't seen it, but your comments amount to "I'm shocked that Hollywood is still willing to play to the retarded masses in order to take their money".

No, I'm not surprised at all about that. Just surprised that no one called them on it (based on an intensive 3-minute Google search anyway). I suppose the white veterans are so few and so feeble at this point that they don't perceive the slight.

I don't understand his comments. After all, I'm just a dumb white boy.

Darn Hollywood for painting the picture of a completely false narrative. White pilots would never do such a thing.
