Solid point. I think this is assuming that the personality is compatible and just from a more 'general' sense of whether the envy of others is preferable to potential higher security (since you think he's the same in both scenarios).

Wait, if other people think he's hot we'll get seated at restaurants faster. I guess I'll take the guy everyone sees as a 10.

Assuming I think she is a 10 I would prefer others to think highly of her as well. I don't see how other people thinking she's ugly would benefit me/us.

I think most people rate my wife higher in looks than I do.

It depends if you use your SO to signal social status or not. I guess I do to some extent, but only to the point where I would be embarrassed of an ugly/fat wife, not to the point where I have to have a hotter wife than everyone else.

To put it another way, I would rather have to deal with the problems/competition of a 10/10 than losing the respect of other people with a 10/2 situation. But I would choose 10/>=5 over 10/10.

I think a 7/7 or 8/8 would be about perfect.

If my woman were 50 pounds lighter she would be at least an 8 but for whatever reason I'm totally hot for her. I'm just hoping that no one comes up to me and says, "Shallow JollyGoodFCAS needs a gal." Or better yet, I'm hoping that Jenny Craig works for her....
