This is definitely the crux of the issue. I think he always felt this way, but continued to punt because he didn't want to make anyone feel bad and basically talked himself into thinking it would work out. If he tells her this, and she is OK with it, then I predict that they will be fine (for now). If she freaks out (like he thinks she will), it's probably over.

His best bet is to be open with his thoughts, that he isn't ready for marriage. If she can't handle that then she's obviously not the best person for him

Some fat guy that can't afford his own place and lives with his GF's parents? He should STFU and thank God anyone touches his private parts.

Just have him tell her "I dont want to get married for at least another year or two, theres nothing wrong, Im just not ready yet". The girl may go insane over the "if theres nothing wrong then why dont you want to get married" thing, or may accept it and leave him alone for some time.

Now leverage that into wanting to pay down their debt from student loans before dropping some serious coin on a ring.
