I am new to this field
, working on course 1, and would like to get a feel for those who are working for different companies. Such as, do you work for an insurance company or what type of company do you work for? I know that not all actuaries work for insurance companies but don't know the other types of companies. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |

It's not funny. Claude is the D.W. Simpson webmaster, and he has a particular knack for finding links when someone asks an employment question that may have been asked months or years prior. He has a phenomenal memory for those things.
Of course, some people think it's amusing that new posters ask the same questions as the new posters before them did, but then again, some people will find anything amusing. I work for an insurance company, myself. But other options are: 1. Reinsurance companies (insurers for insurance companies) 2. Insurance consulting firms (Large ones such as Milliman or Tillinghast as well as many smaller ones.) 3. Regulatory agencies, i.e. the various state insurance departments. 4. Government bodies with their own actuaries, e.g. The Social Security Administration, Medicare/Health Care Financing Administration (I think they have a new name now), etc. 5. Universities and Colleges if you have an academic bent and want to teach actuarial science. Those are probably the largest categories, but there are actuaries working for banks and investment firms, for software companies that develop actuarial software, for insurance brokerages, actuarial recruiters (people like Claude |

Possible, "Springfield" is suspiciously Simpson-y for a location.
But if so, the questions are still legitimate, and probably there are lurkers who would like to see the answers. And I never miss an opportunity to be pedantic. |

To add one to Maine-iac's list (which is CAS-centric):
6. Insurance Brokers (Marsh, Aon Risk) Sorta unrelated to her list, on the SOA side: 7. Employee Benefits Consulting Firms (Hewitt, Watson Wyatt, Towers Perrin*) * Towers Perrin and Tillinghast are different branches of the same firm. |
