"Statesmanship has to be judged first and foremost by whether you recognize historic opportunities and seize them," Rice said in an interview with Cox Newspapers.

"When you think of statesmen, you think of people who seized historic opportunities to change the world for the better, people like Roosevelt, people like Churchill, and people like Truman, who understood the challenges of communism. And this president has been an agent of change for the better -- historic change for the better."

They're already starting to think about his legacy. Doubts must be creeping in.
They should follow your buddy Bill's example. He never, ever worried about his legacy.
Clinton is gone.
It's been 4 years.
Let it go.
No can do. I can easily let go, but when people who loved him criticize Bush for doing the same thing as their boy, I have to point it out. It's not so much a poke at Clinton as it is at them.
Funny, because I thought my was clearly a poke at the Bushies that criticized Billy for doing the same thing. Huh. Maybe you should retrace the flow of this discussion.

So tree, you'd rank W up there with FDR?
I find her inclusion of FDR in that list to be an unfortunate choice. Your point is taken.
You would rank W as one of the great statesmen in history?
Yea, that coalition of the willing is rather WWII-esque.
We got 5 peacekeepers from the Azerbaijan! God Bless America!
(you waving your flag yet?)
Oh, I don't know if I actually agree with her. I think Reagan was much better. I was just amused at the knee-jerk reaction of the Bush-haters. History will judge, and a lot of it probably will have to do with the status of Iraq and the general trend of terrorism in 15-20 years.
I'll take an opinion from somebody that doesn't refer to Bush as "my husband", Helen Thomas:

Quote:
"This is the worst president ever," she told the Torrance, Calif., Daily Breeze in January. "He is the worst president in all of American history."

I have a great deal of respect for Helen Thomas and no love for Bush, but another of my pet peeves* is when people describe Bush as "the worst president" or "the most dangerous president."

How about a little perspective?

* Maybe we should rename this thread "Malik's Pet Peeves." Or not.

You're right.
She should have said something like:
BY FAR the worst President ever.

I agree 100% with the sentence I bolded. It is too soon to judge the long-term consequences of the Bush presidency.

I am not too optimistic, but history may vindicate his Middle East policies.

Let's also not rush to judgment on Saddam.
After a few years, Iraqis may change their opinion of him, too.

Saturday Night Live had a pretty funny Hardball sketch where Andrew Card was saying stuff like, "This is the most flawlessly exectued military action ever. George Bush is the greatest leader in the history of the world. He has the most beautiful smile..." etc.
You have to admit, there are a couple of conservative pundits who really do almost sound like that - Ann Coulter springs to mind.

It remains to be seen whether this invasion was a net positive(on a global scale - locally it probably was). Comparisons with Churchill are premature at best.

A presidential appointee made some overly-fulsome remarks about her boss.

In other news, bears continue to poop in the woods.

Tonight at 11 - a hard-hitting investigative report on the ethnicity of the Pontiff.

I know you're trying to be provocative, but I'm not convinced that an honest historical reckoning will rank Saddam Hussein among the worst tyrants of the Twentieth Century.
