Default The Stocek, Hracek, and Babula Rebel Forum Chess Tournament

Welcome to the Rebel Forum's first chess variant tournament. As the name of the tournament implies, we are playing Three Checks Chess (the tournament is named after probably the top three Czech chess players of the day, including Jiri Stocek, who placed in a tie for 2nd at the recent World Open in Philadelphia). All rules of Three Checks Chess are the same as regular chess except that a player wins by checking his opponent three times. On the third check, the game is over and the losing player should resign. Note: checkmate does count as a win even if three checks have been delivered, and if on a move the king is in check by more than one piece, it only counts as one check. Example: 1 e4 e5 2 Qh4 Nc6 3 Qxf7+ and white has checked his opponent once.

How to participate:
1. Establish a new ID on the chess server, which is the same as your handle (or if you are better known on the chess server with a different name, use that) and add "TC" to the end. This way you will keep your games separate from our other RF games.
2. You will play two games (one as white, one as black) versus each opponent you match up against. To find a match, make a post to this thread saying that you are looking for an opponent (this is a "challenge"). To accept a challenge, post that you have accepted that person's challenge (this is "acceptance"). You cannot challenge for more than one opponent at a time: in other words, if you are looking for multiple matches, post a challenge, wait until someone accepts, then you can post another challenge.
3. You may not start a match with someone if you are already involved in a match with that person. Even if one of the two games have been completed, you must wait until the other one is finished to start a new one.
4. If there is a challenge outstanding, you are not allowed to post a challenge. In other words, you need to accept the challenge that is outstanding. The only exception is rule 3, if you are already playing that person. If so, you may post your own challenge. If there are multiple challenges outstanding, you must accept the first challenge made (unless rule 3 applies, in which case you will go to the next player).
5. When each game is finished, you must post it to this thread.
6. When both games are finished, post the result of the match in bold. For example: Final Result: RedSoxFan 2, All Clear 0. Please try to use bold only for this purpose. I will post standings on occasion.
7. There is no limit to the number of games you are playing at a time, so long as the above rules are followed.
8. Players must make at least 14 moves over any 7 day period. This includes weekends.
9. There will be two champions: the player who was won the most games, and the player with the highest winning percentage. Important note: In order to qualify for highest winning percentage, you must have at least one-third the number of wins as the player with the most wins. For example, if ZeroVektor goes 15-3, and Jonas Grumby goes 4-0, Jonas is ineligible for the highest winning percentage prize. If Jonas had a fifth win, then he would qualify.
10. To be considered for this tournament, each game must be started by 1pm EST on Monday, July 26. Further, each game must be completed by 1pm EST on Monday, August 9. Any games still in progress will be a double forfeit by both players unless one player is forfeited by rule 8 or the tournament director (me) decides that unusual circumstances apply.
11. Participation in this tournament is no excuse for complaining that you have too many games to play, and is certainly not an excuse for poor play in other chess tournaments.

Good luck and have fun!

Additional rules/clarifications that have arisen since this post was first made:
7/12 3:50pm EST: Added "with that person" to rule 3.

Sounds like fun. So there could be a lot of otherwise needless sacrificing of pieces taking place to accomplish the goal?

Pretty wild. I'm guessing I would have less of an advantage vs a weaker player than in real chess, but I'm not sure. Any advice about this - have you played this and want to share any tips or are you going to hog them for yourself?

I'm in, look for the TC after my usual ID.

Exactly

I've never played it and have no idea what strategies to use. I've actually given it some thought and haven't come up with anything.

I think better chess players will have somewhat of an advantage because in general they have a better tactical eye, but in this variant anyone could be good at it.

I understand the reason for a different login name, but unless all the variants are going to be initialed TC, why should we use this, as opposed to, oh.. 'Var'? Also, I assume that the variant games'll all be spaced out enough so there is no overlap.

(I just don't want to create a new name for each variant... I guess I'm just silly that way!)

UA - We can probably just still use the "TC" names for the next variant tournament, whatever variant that might be.

By the way, we need a little more formality to the challenge/acceptance process.

Should #3 say "You may not start a match with someone if you are already ivolved in a match with that person"? If not, how does that jive with #7?

Can I assume that there are no matches going on? Because all I see is one "challenge" by Anonymouse and no acceptances.

By the way, I'm doing this instead of a chess cup this time. If you were really looking forward to a cup and don't want to play in the variant tournament, you're welcome to start a cup tournament on your own.
