Default Is anyone interested in a FREE weekly review & help session on Zoom plus free videos?

Updated 24 June 2020

Is anyone interested in a FREE weekly STAM review & help session on Zoom? Plus FREE old videos on some topics?

At least while covid-19 restrictions preclude my offering face-to-face exam-prep seminars (and perhaps continuing well beyond that time), I’m continuing to hold a FREE meeting on Zoom for 30-to-40 minutes each Thursday at 5 pm California time for anyone who wants to view it, provided that at least a handful of folks are interested. I hope that this might help you prepare for the exam in this crazy and fraught time.

And I'm releasing some OLD videos on some of the topics---see the post farther down in this thread.

Each session will focus on helping participants make sense of one or two topics that I view as “core” (that is, that either are regularly tested or are crucial to understanding other material that is regularly tested) or that some of you ask me to cover. Each session will consist mainly of my reviewing and presenting the key ideas and formulas—essentially an excerpt from my seminars—maybe with some time at the end for questions from viewers on that or closely related material. I doubt that I’ll demonstrate solving practice problems.

During a session, some of the time your screen will display me explaining something, some of the time it will display printed text while I talk, and some of the time it will display my writing live on my tablet while I talk; therefore, the sessions should probably not be viewed just on a smart phone since a bigger screen would be better.

In the next post in this thread I provide the URL link and password for the Zoom meeting. Feel free to e-mail me at jimdaniel@actuarialseminars.com with any requests for topics for me to cover. I’ll always announce on this thread the topic or topics for the coming week.

Based on my experience helping people prepare for SoA exams since 1989, I consider the following to be among the Core topics that I might cover:

STAM Seminar Excerpt #1: Mixture distributions

STAM Seminar Excerpt #2: (a,b,0)-recursion problems

STAM Seminar Excerpt #3: 0-modified (or truncated) frequency distributions

STAM Seminar Excerpt #4: Discrete-type aggregate severity

STAM Seminar Excerpt #5: Risk measures: VaR and TVaR

STAM Seminar Excerpt #6: Policy modifications in general

STAM Seminar Excerpt #7: Deductibles

STAM Seminar Excerpt #8: Major-medical-insurance calculations

STAM Seminar Excerpt #9: Homeowners insurance calculations: coinsurance requirements

STAM Seminar Excerpt #10: Estimates and estimators

STAM Seminar Excerpt #11: Confidence intervals and approximate variances

STAM Seminar Excerpt #12: Maximum likelihood estimation: method and properties

STAM Seminar Excerpt #13: MLE confidence intervals; the Delta Method

STAM Seminar Excerpt #14: Hypothesis testing ideas

STAM Seminar Excerpt #15: The Billy Problem: what the Bayesian approach and the credibility approach seek to solve

STAM Seminar Excerpt #16: The Bayesian approach to updating expectations

STAM Seminar Excerpt #17: Classical limited-fluctuation credibility

STAM Seminar Excerpt #18: Buhlmann(¬-Straub) credibility

STAM Seminar Excerpt #19: Non-parametric and semi-parametric empirical Bayes

STAM Seminar Excerpt #20: The loss-reserving problem

STAM Seminar Excerpt #21: The expected-loss-ratio method for loss reserves

STAM Seminar Excerpt #22: The chain-ladder method for loss reserves

STAM Seminar Excerpt #23: The Bornheutter-Ferguson method for loss reserves

STAM Seminar Excerpt #24: The average-cost-per-claim method for loss reserves

STAM Seminar Excerpt #25: Rate-making for the overall average rate

STAM Seminar Excerpt #26: Relativities (or differentials) for risk classifications

STAM Seminar Excerpt #27: Balancing back to finalize rates

Default Sessions start 30 April 2020

Updated 24 June 2020 2020

I'm continuing to commit to offering these STAM sessions for 30 to 40 minutes weekly, if interest (and my energy) continues, on
THURSDAYS AT 5 PM CALIFORNIA TIME.

Anyone is welcome to join the sessions without notifying me first. The URL for connecting is
https://zoom.us/j/98863427671?pwd=QX...FsSWtxVnZFZz09
good through 8 April 2021, after which I’ll post a new URL.

The posting immediately following this one on this Outpost thread will be edited regularly to list the scheduled topics for each session. If there’s a topic (or topics) you’d like me to address, let me know at any time by an e-mail to jimdaniel@actuarialseminars.com ; the initial post in this thread lists some possible topics. Please NEITHER post your request to this Outpost thread NOR send me an Outpost PM.

Every few weeks I’ll add to this Outpost thread to announce whether I’m still continuing these sessions or have ceased giving them.

Default FREE old videos on several STAM topics

Back in 2010, as an experiment for the start-up company AbacusLI, I recorded a low-tech set of “Fundamentals” or “Overview” or “Roadmap” videos for what was then SoA/CAS Exam C/4. These weren’t videos of my exam-prep seminar; rather, they were a new kind of learning resource that presented just the main big ideas with some elementary (not exam-like) demonstration problems and solutions to illustrate the main ideas. These videos were intended as a sort of “preview” course learners could view before digging into all the details in a study manual, full video course, textbook, or face-to-face exam-prep seminar.

When AbacusLI closed up shop at the end of 2017, the videos were released to me to use however I please. While the videos seem rather inelegant all these years later, almost all of them remain applicable to SoA Exam STAM. So I’ve deleted the irrelevant videos and am providing the rest at no cost to anyone interested; the material new to STAM such as rate-making, loss-reserving, and individual health insurance are not previewed in these videos. You can download all the files by downloading the entire STAMvideos folder from my Dropbox at
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pz38umozr...NYrcIcpAa?dl=0 .
NOTE that some company networks block Dropbox URLs, so you might need to download these at home or over some other network.

Would it be possible to cover earlier subjects? I'm hoping I can complement my online tutorials with your reviews, but I just started studying for the October sitting. And I feel like trying to follow two subjects at a time may be harder.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,
