Default Powell Says War Service Should Pertain to Everyone

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) refused to get into the debate over the Vietnam service of the U.S. presidential candidates on Sunday but said if the United States ever went back to mandatory enlistment, everybody should be "equally liable" for war service.

OK *******, I mean Colin.
Guess what? Try to recruit me for your war machine and I ain't going.
I'd rather be in jail than fight in this bogus "war on terror".

Do you ever try to behave rationally or do you just enjoy hating people for no reason?

He is saying IF we had mandatory enlistment, the crap that GW pulled to get out of service shouldn't be allowed. He isn't saying we SHOULD have mandatory enlistment.

Not complaining about this war is irrational. Waving your flag while America kills 10,000+ Iraqi civilians - that's irrational.
Pi - that's irrational.
You - that's irrational.

Did you read the article? He's setting us up for the draft...

Quote:
With the Iraqi war causing greater casualties and extended deployments, legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Congress to revive the draft, which was ended in 1973 as the Vietnam War wound down and subsequently replaced by an all-volunteer army.

But Powell said on Fox, "If we ever go back to conscription -- and I don't think we will have to go back to conscription under any set of circumstances I can see -- I hope that at that time it will be the kind of conscription that was put in at the end of the Vietnam War."

maybe this seems odd, but i fully support a draft.

you get a better cross section of the people from this country, and you don't wind up with the majority of enlisted people being from uneducated oppressed towns who have no other alternative in life but to join the service.

i wouldn't mind seeing some potential harvard puke holding an m-16 on the front line with some other punk sgt. barking orders at him.

everyone ought to have a dose of the military.

(i feel this way despite my opposition to this war...i gotta be consistent.)

My guess is that Powell only sticks around because George the Forty 1st has asked him to keep an eye on his son.

Voluntary enlistment would change little, unless you make that less voluntary.

Having the draft might make pols think more about solving problem without going to war as it would make the decision more unpopular if the need isnt clear.
