Been reading a bunch of stuff from The Science Fiction Bookshelf at Project Gutenberg.

I've just been working my way down the alphabet (by author), and am currently in G.

I skipped Edgar Rice Burroughs, because I've read all his public domain stuff I could find not too long ago.

I skipped R.U.R. because I thought it was kind of boring the first time I read it.

I only read 2 things from Cory Doctorow. I liked "Craphound" alright, but Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom seemed a little lame or limp, so I didn't want any more of him. Maybe later I'll try more.

I also skipped most stuff that looked like it was written before 1910.

This has been going on for a couple of months, but I don't think I'd mentioned it here, since I mostly stick to posting about the hardcopy I'm reading. Maybe that'll change. (Though any time I've mentioned Burroughs and Weber I was probably reading softcopy.)

Anyway, hardcopy:

I've been reading through a stack of L'amour I picked up at Goodwill.

And A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck, a Newberry Honor book that my wife recommended. It was very good.

And, re-reading some of the Recluse series by L. E. Modesitt Jr.*, which are very good, IMO.

*Mahler (you know, the Howard C. Mahler who makes those study notes we all know and love) saw me reading one of them during break at a seminar and mentioned that he liked them, too. And if anyone reads this and suddenly knows who I am, I'm impressed.

Never mind then.

Here's another link, that Shelfari tells me is my public address for my shelf/account/whatever:
http://www.shelfari.com/o1518296018

I add books when I think of them. I've got too many books (well, more than can fit on my shelves. I've still got a couple hundred in boxes. I can never have too many books... until the stacks of books I hoard falls on top of me, smothering me to death.)

I agree with this... especially if you read Friedman's column regularly, the book is overkill.

What I'm NOT reading is "Marley and Me". It got great reviews, and the parts I've read were funny, but it just didn't grab me in a "can't wait to see what happens" sort of way. It's due tomorrow and I only ever got halfway through it.

On my ipod right now, listening on my commute, I've been switching between Jan Karon's Light from Heaven and Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth.

The Jan Karon book is great if you've read and liked the others, although so far it is not my favorite of the series.

The Jules Verne book took me about 3 hrs (out of 9 or 10 total) to get to the point where I really felt like something was happening. Now it's great around 5.5-6 hrs in. I wanted to listen to this one b/c there's a 3-D movie coming out next month, and my kids want to go. The movie isn't strictly based on the book; it's more like the character in the movie has read it, and says it's all true, and they take their own journey. Probably something the kids will love more than I do, but I wanted to have some reference point before seeing the movie.

If anybody cares, I gave up on Gravity's Rainbow. Goddammit, I really thought I was going to finish it this time. I will go hang my head in shame now.

I just read "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls," Heinlein, and now I am reading "Time Enough for Love."
