Do you really call a toque a 'watch cap'? And if so, where do you live?
I call it a hat, or maybe a funny looking hat.

had a professor who asked during a Queing theory class:

How many of you wait "in" line? (hands raised) How many of you wait "on" line? (hands raised) I wait "on" line. That is correct.

It was pretty funny to see.

I call a watch cap a watch cap and a toque a toque. I've lived in the midwest and the west coast. A watch cap is a plain winter hat. I believe watch cap is a military term, but I'm half guessing. You know, something the guard wears at night while he's on watch. I know for a fact the U.S. Navy and Army call it a watch cap. Military ones are plain black. A toque is a chef's hat. What is it exactly that you are calling a toque?

Most of the time, I still speak in the English way and I get utterly confused.

Instead of pop or soda, I say "soft drink".
I do say wait in line but most of the time, I use the word "queue".
Like Swiper, I say "water fountain" and not "drinking fountain" nor "bubbler".
Instead of "toque", I say "woolley hat".

I also often call it a queue, for clarity.

In the great white north (canada) a toque is the thing that goes on your head to keep it warm in the winter. (also now to be hip and happening)

tfh = tin-foil hat

Quote:
A tin-foil hat is a piece of headgear designed, according to some people, to shield the brain from mind control and/or mind reading by surrounding it with a metallic lining (typically, aluminium foil or tin-foil).

What do they call a brimless hat that a chef would wear?

I've never heard of either of them.
