I apologize. I am sitting for course 2. What course are you sitting for?

Are you aware of the e-mail study groups sponsored by the CAS? I'm not sure how good they are, but I know they exist.
The idea is that you can e-mail your questions, comments, etc about a specific course to the entire study group, and you receive other people's questions by e-mail. If you do sign up, you can stop (unsubscribe) whenever you want. Here is a link if you are interested in signing up: http://www.casact.org/students/studygroups.cfm Note that you must give a name and e-mail address, but I'm not sure the name has to be real. The e-mail can certainly be yahoo, hotmail, etc. If want to see what sort of activity takes place, try http://lists.casact.org/scripts/lyri...it=studygroup2 (change the last digit to the exam you want) and choose "Read messages". I would suggest you scroll back to late April / early May to get a better picture, since that's when the most posting would occur. The CAS has archives of old posts to studygroups at http://www.casact.org/discuss/archivelist.htm I don't know how valuable anyone finds these. I would be curious to hear from anyone who has actually participated in one. |

I participated in one of them and found it to be quite valuable. It seemed that 5 or 6 individuals were interested in discussing the material. We happened to be all working out of the same manual.

Mr. White, I signed up for the course 1 e-mail study group. I received about 10 messages a day, and unsubscribed about a week from the exam. I worked through some of the more obscure problems I didn't find in the practice exams, though I didn't encounter any problems like them on the exam.
I think it would be helpful to study with 5-6 people, like WQN said. I was able to put the hours in to understand the material for the last exam by myself, but feel that working with others would improve teamwork skills. I'm planning on taking course 2 sometime in the future. Tank, if you would like to start an informal study group for course 2, I'm interested. I plan on starting to study again sometime after the results from the May exam are mailed. |

it's very hard to get an in-person study group to gether outside of college or the really big actuarial centers (NYC, Atlanta, SF and Chicago come to mind). I think in the abscence of a good in person study group an internet one can be helpful. I was involved with one that set up chat rooms to discuss problems.
