Couldn't you treat this as a simple binomial distribution. n =7 p = Pr( of picking your own coat/hat) = 1/n = 1/7 E(X) = n x p = n x 1/n = 1. |

Each subsequent Bernoulli Trial is independent of the previous one in the binomial distribution. Here, if you pick a coat, that coat is no longer available for the next person to pick, so there is no independence.
