Arrived to the airport on Wednesday morning around 10:00. Airport was very dead. Arrived at the Venetian to try to sleep off some of my cold that would stay with me the whole trip. Played a couple NIT games and a little blackjack at the Frontier, staying about even.
Thursday - start of March Madness - loaded up on Niagara in the first game against OK as they turned a 3 point halftime deficit into a near 20 point loss. Continued to take a beating in the later games. Friday - got it all back and then some. Had the Catamounts on the money line. Had Bucknell. One of my only two losses was the Badgers where they were in the money (after being fouled and hitting both foul shots with 2.4 seconds left). UNI passes the ball in and gets a running shot off at the buzzer that goes in to blow the cover. That was the story of my trip regarding close games - kinda like races in poker, I feel like I never seem to win my fair share. Saturday - cashed one ticket the whole day and didn't play the two late ones I liked (WVU and Ky) cause I was so frustrated with my lack of success. Sunday - moved over to the Rio where my friend had 2 nights of a comped room from some play at Harrah's last year. So, I'm walking around and I hear someone say that there's a big tournament here. I walk over to the poker room and my jaw drops. It's a $10,000 WSOP circuit tourney - 220 players. They had some of the tables by the poker room and some of them in the hallway between the two casinos. The rest of the day was pretty much walking back and forth, watching the action. I'm sure I'll forget to mention eveyone I saw but the notables were: Phil Hellmuth Phil Ivey - had an oriental girl massaging him the WHOLE time TJ Cloutier - enormous guy Jen Harman - TV doesn't really represent how tiny she is (I'm weak and could probably pick her up with one arm) Gabe Thaler Ron Rose Dan Harrington - I had his book with me and should have asked him to sign it but he got bounced early and I only saw him once again walking through the casino Cyndy Violette Howard Lederer Danny Negraneau Andy Bloch Evelyn Ng - she is HOT Hoyt Corkins Jeff Shulman John Juanda Scotty Nguyen Minnesota Jim Meehan Joe Awada Amir Vahedi Allen Cunningham Antonio Esfandiari Chad Brown Phil Laak David Pham Erik Seidel Dewey Tomko I said a brief hello to Juanda and Danny when they walked by and wished them luck. The only person I talked to for more than that was TJ's wife. I asked her if she found it dull to sit there and watch for that long and she said that she was just there for "moral support" and that she really knew nothing about poker. She was very friendly but not too talkative. The caketopper however was seeing Norman Chad in the flesh. Some interesting hands - Phil Hellmuth and Ron Rose were in a 6 way pot (Rose had the button). Flop was k j 8 - 2 clubs. Checked around to Rose who led out half the pot, Hellmuth raised, Rose called. Turn was a nonclub 3. Hellmuth checked, Rose checked. River was a nonclub 4. Phil bet about 2/3 of the pot, Rose thought and thought and called. Rose had j 6 clubs. Phil had 3 4 of clubs to runner runner two pair. Watched TJ knock out two people getting all in with bottom 2 pair on the flop vs nut flush draw and top pair king kicker. It held up. Let me just say that if you think it's the camera that gives Phil a bad rep, it's not. He's a total jag in person too. He showed a bluff with a 4 7 offsuit and then wen around to all the nearby tables telling everyone he bluffed someone with 4 7 offsuit. About 10 minutes later, he was still talking and TJ stood up and said, "Phil are you still talking about that bluff, it's not like you are the only one who's ever bluffed someone with 47 offsuit." Eveyone cracked up. After every hand he'd fold for about 10 minutes, Phil would stand up and look around the room. I can imagine what is going through his head, "someone look at me, notice me, admire me, love me." He left about 30 minutes early for the dinner break and didn't come back until about an hour into the next level. Another good Phil story - we were standing by the entrance to the rooms (after play was over for the night). Who comes walking by but Phil still in his sunglasses heading up to his room. We turned around and he had walked by the guard and the guard stopped him because he didn't show his key. I didn't hear the converstaion they had but I could only imagine him saying to the guard - "do you know who I am??? I'm the best poker player in the world." Monday I played in a $45 buyin (20 rebuy) tourney at the Imperial Palace. I had gone there to check out their card room and it was starting in 15 minutes so I signed up. I should have done my homework before signing up. Blinds went up way too fast, even if you include the rebuy. The action started 11 handed with 6 tables. I was short stacked after not getting many playable hands and went all in with j9 suited and got called by the worst player on the table in the bb with q6 of same suit. No help, gone - waste of time. Players there were pretty bad but you have no wiggle room to actually play because of the blind structure. Following that I went and played a marathon session of 3/6 at the Mirage - did ok but got way too many big pairs cracked for my liking and felt like I should've left there with a lot more coin. There was so much dead money coming through that table and I couldn't get my hands on as much as I'd like. It's funny, you can play like a rock for hours and still get called by 5 people when you raise - that's the sign of bad players IMO. Before I left on Tuesday, I stopped downstairs to see who was still left. Ivey, Cloutier, Harman, Thaler, Corkins were the only major players I recognized from the final 27. I had Jennifer's Card Player issue on me but didn't have a pen (nor feel like spending $5 to buy one to get her to sign it). They were playing to 9 on Tuesday and the final table was Wednesday. Top prize was almost $700k with top 18 being paid. I'm not sure what the Rio's plans are for the WSOP events but if they don't have a huge convention hall or something to put some tables, it's going to be a nightmare. Back to the grind, hope you enjoyed the writeup...

I got a pic with TJ C. He is big. Look at my avatar. Was in a tourney with him 2 years ago. I had Aces and he lost with QQ vs me. Then I got AA again and took him out. He says to me when I called his all-in - "You got Aces again!!!" I didn't even show my cards. Then I asked him for a pic. He was happy to do so. Very nice guy.
