Can someone please explain to me what the first 3 paragraphs on page 151 of Kellison's Theory of Interest book mean in reference to table 5.2?

It is a little confusing, I think if you look at the examples on the next page, and then go back and reread it, it will make more sense (thats what I did anyway).
