Default Lebanon

On Lebanon, the G8 said it deplored a new wave of political killings, as it called upon its neighbours -- "in particular Syria" -- to fully comply with UN resolutions which call for an end to foreign meddling.

The United States also stepped up pressure on Damascus, saying it is "certain" that Syria still has intelligence agents operating in Lebanon to destabilise the country.

Syria withdrew the last of its troops in April to end a 29-year presence. But a senior US official, who asked not to be named, said: "There is no question that Syrian military intelligence agents have stayed behind and are asserting a very negative influence."

Lebanese Deputy Marwan Fares has stressed that Israel is standing behind the recent assassination of the former Secretary General of the Lebanese Communist Party, George Hawi, pointing out to the similarity with the other previous assassinations committed by the Israeli Mossad in Beirut southern suburb against leaders of Hizbullah.

In a statement to Tishrin newspaper published Thursday, Fares said that “Hawi is one of the Lebanese national symbols who participated in launching the resistance movement against Israel, and thus Israel is the main enemy for him. The Israeli Mossad is acting in Beirut freely."

Do you think Syria is meddling in Lebanon's affairs?
Do you think Israel is?

I don't think the US has such a good track record when it comes to ME intelligence. Hard for me to believe anything the US says...

That was how many years ago?

What has he recently done that would make him a target of Israel?

Oh, and just because Israel is his main enemy, doesn't mean he is Israel's main enemy.

Do you think Syria is behind it?
Why would they do that?

I think it is more likely than Israel, but that doesn't mean it was Syria.

Why would [Syria] do that?
Hmm, Syria was just humiliated internationally by people in Lebanon. Could that be it? Possibly.

Bin Laden and some of his ilk dream of creating a single Arabia nation. If they can gain control of Lebannon, that is one step closer to their dream.

Lebannon had deep divides. Could it be internal groups trying to foment internal strife? Yes.
