Draft lotteries and drafts are not nearly as interesting as the games. And seeing the outcomes live is not in any way better than waiting for coherent analysis. Unless, the incoherent analysis is what draws you. If that's the case, then go nuts!

If the Avs win the lottery, I'll have a Crosby #87 sweater ready to go by this evening.

It'll be rigged to give the stRangers Crosby, since they'll be buying out Jagr's contract, probably first thing tomorrow.

Actually, what I hear is that Jagr will stay, and they'll dump just about everyone else...Dunham and Holik included.

Just a reminder...

#balls in the lottery = max [(3 - #playoff appearances in the last 3 years),1]

Rangers, Columbus, Pitt, and Buff. all have 3 balls.

I thought it was # of balls = max(1, 3 - playoff appearances - min(1,#1 overall picks))

I don't think so, Pitt had the top pick in 2003 and took G Marc-Andre Fleury...granted this was acquired through Florida...

In 2002 Columbus had the #1 overall pick, but again it was acquired from Florida.

But has Florida made the playoffs the past few years?

My understanding is that they are performing the draft behind closed doors, and then walking into the lights of the cameras to announce the draft in reverse order.

The draft is weighted with the "worst" teams have three ping pong balls, the "pretty bad" having two, and the rest having one. The way that I heard the draft is taking place is that the first ball drawn will draft first, the second drawn will draft second and so on. As a mathematical curiousity (and I know that someone can help me), would the math be equivalent if they drew in reverse order??? Meaning, the first ball drawn picks last, the second ball drawn picks second last, and so on. However, a team is still "alive" if all of its ping pong balls haven't been picked. For example, a team with three balls would have two additional "lives" over a team with only a single ping pong ball. On the surface, it appears that the "reverse order" method would have an advantage to teams with more ping pong balls.

I think that teams should be able to trade ping pong balls.
