Default Sci-fi recommendation

I am not into sci-fi/fantasy a lot (surprising I know). But I am in that phase where I want to try some sci fi and need recommendations. I got Netflix so don’t have to worry about cost of exploring. I don’t think if you told me to try out the essentials I’d enjoy those much. I have liked movies like Contact, War of Worlds, a couple of Mars movies I watched, Matrix, the meteor movies – deep impact and space cowboys. I want to see movies that are deep on the intellectual side and are believable. The Starwars saga just hasn’t appealed to me as I don’t believe in laser swords as a good means of fighting, seriously. Any recommendation would be appreciated.

hey, if you like sword fighting, may I suggest Highlander?
(first movie rocks, 2nd is weird, 3rd is a shadow of the 1st, 4th incorporates characters from the TV series...and I love the tv series )

I second Gattaca, Galaxy Quest, and Minority Report.

Also Red Dwarf if you're into that kind of humor, although I don't imagine it will be easy to rent or borrow (unless you live near me, that is). There is some science and fiction in there as well, it's not 100% for laughs (maybe 98%). You might catch a glimpse of it on PBS if your station carries it.
