Default Sweet neocon

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Musi....ap/index.html

Quote:

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Rolling Stones' upcoming album contains a song seemingly critical of President Bush, but Mick Jagger denies it's directed at him, according to the syndicated TV show "Extra."

"It is not really aimed at anyone," Jagger said on the entertainment-news show's Wednesday edition. "It's not aimed, personally aimed, at President Bush. It wouldn't be called 'Sweet Neo Con' if it was."

The song is from the new album, "A Bigger Bang," set for release September 6.

There is no mention of Bush or Iraq. But it does refer to military contractor Halliburton, which was formerly run by Vice President Cheney and has been awarded key Iraq contracts, and the rising price of gasoline.

"How come you're so wrong? My sweet neo-con, where's the money gone, in the Pentagon," goes one refrain.

The song also includes the line: "It's liberty for all, democracy's our style, unless you are against us, then it's prison without trial."

"It is certainly very critical of certain policies of the administration, but so what! Lots of people are critical," Jagger told "Extra."

A representative for the Stones said the group had no further comment about the song.

The Rolling Stones intend to kick off a U.S. tour in Boston August 21.
A cogent political commentary or an attempt to make the Stones relevant again?

Given how fundamentally evil our president is, I'm surprised and disappointed there haven't been enough protest songs by contemporary rock groups. Maybe these dinosaurs will give contemporary rockers the kick in the ass they need.

Or just Mick Jagger's personal opinion?

They need to balance out the blind support Toby Keith has given him.

My big questions are...

what makes these guys who've done precious little with their life but play music and screw people think they've got anything to add to the political discourse in America, and...

what kind of moran would look to Mick Jagger for political insights?

They have a right to opinions and a right to write songs about them, but...

Same but different kind of morans who look to Pat Robertson and his ilk for political insights?

He's a country music singer whose songs since September 11 basically consist of "You're not a patriot unless you support Bush". Some sample lyrics (lots more, google them if you want to) - "The Taliban Song" in particular is great, I think it's really great how he took the time to get to know people in Afghanistan, so that he could represent them:

"American Soldier"
And I will always do my duty, no matter what the price, I've counted up the cost, I know the sacrafice, Oh, and I don't want to die for you, But if dyin's asked of me, I'll bear that cross with an honor, 'Cause freedom don't come free.
I'm an american soldier, an american, Beside my brothers and my sisters I will proudly take a stand, When liberty's in jeopardy I will always do what's right, I'm out here on the front lines, sleep in peace tonight. American soldier

"The Taliban Song"
I'm just a middle-aged, middle-eastern camel herdin' man I got a little, 2 bedroom cave here in North Afghanistan Things used to be real nice and they got out of hand when they moved in They call themselves the Taliban (ooooo yeah the taliban) (taliban baby)
Now I ain't seen my wife's face since they came here They make her wear a scarf over her head that covers her from ear to ear She loves the desert and the hot white sand But man she's just like me, nah she can't stand The Taliban (ooo taliban baby)

"Courtesy of the Red White and Blue"
Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch came flyin’ in
From somewhere in the back
Soon as we could see clearly
Through our big black eye
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of July

Hey Uncle Sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
Started shakin’ her fist
And the eagle will fly
Man, it’s gonna be hell
When you hear Mother Freedom
Start ringin’ her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue

Question for anybody familiar with this song: anybody think that he actually had something else in there rather than "somewhere in the back", and he changed it at the last minute? Hmm, trying to think of something that rhymes with "in the back" that he could have used instead.

Reminds me of another thread:

Quote:
When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.

If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal.

I guess he never actually listened to the lyrics...
