Well Done!

Notice how often Freeman folded even when he had less than 2 BB left. I've always felt this was the right play, even if it means having to duke it out with your BB and random cards). But the seems to be a concensus here (on the AO) to push when you get low.
P.S. Helmuth also talks about being OK with being 'blinded out' of a tourney.

I personally refuse to push with hands like T7o just because of being worried about being blinded out (Note: Hardinda - This does not mean I NEVER push with T7o or the likes). But I know there have been posts here saying you have to do it. Although maybe I'm out of context.

Thoughts?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Side note: This is what I mean by the EV is to low using the chip count method.
Note: Freeman was able to 7x his $'s with greater than 7 to 1 odds.

This is an extreme example but I think the logic flows all the way up.

If this post makes no sense see the SnG - EV thread I started (If you care).

http://www.actuary.ca/actuarial_disc...ad.php?t=60519

10,000 / 25 = 400. Would anyone have been willing to give 400 to 1 odds Freeman won't win this when he was at 25? (Assume it's not Freeman for now - would you give ANYONE 400 to 1 here?)
According to the chip count method that's the odds. I say it's WAY off.

I think pushing is frequently correct, but here the circumstances were not generally right as he either had no fold equity < 2BB or he wasn't going to be the first one in.

He was correct to fold in those situation because he had ZERO FE, and needed a better than average hand to go to battle with.

At the end of a party sng - 3 or 4 handed - you have to shove with less than premium hands (when you still have FE) to stay afloat, or you will end up relying totally on the luck of the cards....

so I think this is a different situation. If I'm at the end of a party sng with 2BBs or less, I'm waiting around as long as I can for a hand.

I think we should start our own poker site and allow players to sell their seat during Sng's. For example, MNBridge could calculate the odds and then someone who is down to 25 chips could sell their seat for a quarter or something. It would be better if they had about 200 chips and just wanted to cut losses. In Freeman's tourney that quarter could have been turned into $1000, I think. Lots of suckers would jump into higher tourneys for cheaper prices and have less chips. On the other hand, you could jump out to a huge chip lead and sell your seat and make a quick profit.

I'd give 399 to 1 odds against a person with 1/400th of the chips actually winning it all, especially if it's late in a tournament.

I'd want to give Harrington on Hold'em (vol #2) to the opponents first.

The reason the chips method is flawed is not because of the chance of winning, it's because the short stack has chances to take 2nd, 3rd, and etc, down to the final payout.

I'll also add that if you suspect others are doing this too, you have to be willing to call with less than premium hands as well...

See here's the problem I have with that.

If you look at the hand where Freeman went from 25 to 175 he did not have to beat 6 other players. Therefore his odds of going from 25 to 175 were better than 7 to 1.

Now what odds would you give to win it once he is at 175?

(This is what I'm refering to in the other thread. I think the chip count method (let's assume 1st only for now) is flawed because it assumes that chips are continuously moving in very small increments. That's not true.

For the people that anted and then did not play their 25 chips were gone. Freeman did not have to worry about that.

P.S. May want to hop back to the EV thread to avoid a hijcak :???:

Since we play bridge together I can say this reasonably: This is... (wait a min-ute) this is... (oh, pooh) ... this is an artifact of asinine "all-in" poker rules.

(recovery follows. Whew!)
In this case, the table played incorrectly. The other players should spontaneously (without cooperation) conspire to push Freeman out by contesting a minimal pot. This situation is discussed in HOH2.

Now I understand the importance of taking someone's last chip.

I propose the following changes to poker when there is at least one side pot.

Terminology:
All-in pot (1) (normally known as the main pot) Consists of all bets placed up to the short stack involved in the pot.
All-in pot (2) (normally known as (one of) the side pot(s). Consists of all bets placed beyond those of the short stack, but not beyond those of the 2nd short stack.
.
.
.
primary pot. = the all-in pot(n) where n-1 is the number of players who are all-in.
etc.

"A player may "mini-all-in-call" when an amount less than a full call will achieve equity of bets in All-in pots(1) through (n). Having done so, the player is treated as "all in" for the rest of the hand, contests for the pots he has equity in, and does not contest otherwise."

Of course a poker lawyer would have fun with this, but I think the idea gets through. I hope so. And there's no logical reason for doing things any other way, except for tradition.

ok.
