Default GM's gang up on 15-yo prodigy

I don't really follow the goings on of the chess world, but I couldn't help notice this article and feel disgusted.

I think he should show up uninvited at whatever tournament he didn't get into and smash all of their heads with steel chairs and a few Stone Cold Stunners.

-or-

Clearly he needs the love and advice of a kindly, wise, old Chinese chessmaster who will build up his ego and teach him all kinds of unconventional chess openings, while he dates Elisabeth Shue.

Would they play a cheesy 80's montauge while he trains?

Who's "they"? I'm talking about real life here. He should really do one of those two things. If he can't find the right guy for the second, he should do the first.

Well if he did that the music would definitely be playing in my head.

If he did the first thing, he should definitely get someone to play Stone Cold Steve Austin's music.

Good thinking. I like that.

Hopefully it would be on pay per view.

Or maybe even TBS.

It's a great 'David versus Goliaths" story - gone wrong where David loses. But is it true?

Firstly you have to look at the 'mathematics' of the qualifying conditions (6 out of 7 positions in the next stage up for grabs).

The only 'decision rule' any player has to apply is 'don't finish last'. Nothing changes if you finish 1st thru 6th, the payoff is identical.

The first person to lose a game in the playoffs is immediately under pressure as if all the other games are draws, he finishes last. As soon as a tail-ender is identified it makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER for anyone else to play for a win. The correct strategy would be for both sides to agree a draw as soon as possible and save energy for wearing down the tail-ender even more. It appears that Gaston and at some stage Felgear were the tailenders as they had slipped down the ladder with a few losses. It would be madness for a GM knowing that as one of the 5 remaining GM's currently occupying one of the 6 available slots you would play for a win, risk losing the game and your qualifying spot.

For those interested in what might really have happened and what the kid is purported to think about all this, check out the daily dirt message board.

Was this a swiss system tournament? If so, aren't there already set tiebreakers for swisses?
