Default do you have to play golf to succeed as an actuary?

I mean, to move into the upper levels of management must you be able to golf? I ask because I do not play the game and have no desire to . There are too many other things I want to do with the time and money .

Yes, you do.

One thing you need to learn is that every actuarial company in the world is exactly the same.

Better hit the links this afternoon.

I've heard it's good for agents at least to be able to play the game - helps with business contacts and everything. I'm sure this goes for all business arrangements and what not - not just actuarial. It might help - I don't think it can hurt.

I don't think that you'll need to learn against your will, though.

I didn't think that I'd have to spell it out for you, but there you have it.

What makes you say he's a "troll" and not just a clueless newbie?

Assuming it's a real question: It doesn't hurt, but there are a lot of other barriers to reaching upper management (management, leadership, sales, presentation, communication, and hygiene all come to mind as issues for actuaries) that you'll have to deal with long before golf becaomes an issue. If you get to the stage where golf matters, you'll figure out a way around it.

My read of the situation is the same as yours.

I don't like being called a troll, and responded in haste. A more accurate response to NH would have been "if anyone here is a troll, then the original poster is".

Btw, golf helps, but I don't think you have to play. The execs at my company ironed out their last major deal at the U.S. Open (not sure ... but some major golfing event) where they and the executives of the other company were both attending as spectators.
