Default Legal Gag on a joke Bush told:

Did you hear the one about blowing up a TV station in the middle of a city?
No?
Good, because if you did, I'd have to kill you...

Quote:
The attorney general last night threatened newspapers with the Official Secrets Act if they revealed the contents of a document allegedly relating to a dispute between Tony Blair and George Bush over the conduct of military operations in Iraq.

It is believed to be the first time the Blair government has threatened newspapers in this way. Though it has obtained court injunctions against newspapers, the government has never prosecuted editors for publishing the contents of leaked documents, including highly sensitive ones about the run-up to the invasion of Iraq.

Why the gag order if it's not even true?

Given that we have twice now bombed Al-Jazeera offices, I agree that some sort of investigation into Bush's comment is warranted.

I think they're high value targets - I'd push to take out their satellite capabilities ASAP.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain has warned media organizations they are breaking the law if they publish details of a leaked document said to show U.S. President George W. Bush wanted to bomb Arabic television station Al Jazeera.
The government's top lawyer warned editors in a note after the Daily Mirror newspaper reported on Tuesday that a secret British government memo said British Prime Minister Tony Blair had talked Bush out of bombing the broadcaster in April last year.

Several British newspapers reported the attorney general's note on Wednesday and repeated the Mirror's allegations, which the White House said were "so outlandish" they did not merit a response. Blair's office declined to comment.

So outlandish that if it gets reprinted it will damage national security.

Fine, just don't cry when they do the same to Fox News.

The White House has characterized the Mirror's reporting as "outlandish", but if that's the case, one wonders why Downing Street has gone into crisis mode not only prosecuting two of its own civil servants David Keogh and Leo O'Connor under the Official Secrets Act but also threatening editors of British newspapers with prosecution an historical first according to Richard Taylor-Norton of the Guardian.

Perhaps Fitzgerald will obtain a grand jury indictment against the person who leaked this national security info? If not, then, as a last resort, he can put some media members through a succession of grueling depositions and indict someone on perjury charges if any details of their testimony are inconsistent in the least bit?

Nah! Not likely, unless the targetted person works in the White House on 'the bad guys' side.

I don't think Fitzgerald can do much in Britain.
