Default To Limbo ... Or Not

I heard on the radio this morning that the Catholic doctrine is eliminating the "limbo" concept. This seems like a big change. Can anyone explain why this is being done?

It really cheapens the sacrament of marriage (even though it's fun).

Heard that this morning on the Today show. The priest they were talking with said that limbo was not an official doctrine but was conjecture to help explain. JPII had asked that it be looked into with the background of a loving and caring God who wants all his children to return to him.

I just read an article on this in the paper (hard copy... no link) and apparently "the last 4 popes have tried to eradicate it from church teachings"

I guess before it got instituted, it was thought that unbaptized babies who died went straight to hell, but with the infantile mortality rates in the middle ages (when limbo was introduced) that freaked everybody out. So they made limbo, because unbaptized babies can't go to heaven (the whole original sin thing)

JP II wrote a catechism in 1992 basically saying that the church can only entrust them (babies who die without baptism) to the mercy of God

That's great because I really have no flexibility at all plus think of all the drunken party goers who've been injured doing the limbo. Plus that stupid faux-calipso song really blows.

Jack, this is supposed to be a serious religious discussion. How low can you go?

banning dancing (in general or a specific type) only serves to make it more popular. i think someone needs to watch footloose again.
