I've never seen a 1/P problem that required it. There was one I believe where you could've used that formula which would've been a quicker route. It does appear on 4/C so you will eventually have to know it.

"Required it" might be the key phrase here. I don't recall having seen this formula before you wrote it, but I would certainly have solved the problem just using the equations for E(blah) and E(blah^2) that you showed in your spoiler . Knowing the equation would have saved me a few seconds, but not much more.

I would have categorized the problem as "conditional probability" and I certainly saw a whole bunch of those on my exam. But I couldn't say whether or not I saw this exact problem.

In any case, gametime50, you should certainly be ready for a question like this one (whether or not you choose to remember this particular formula).

If someone has a copy of TIA's sample exam 1 for 1/P could you PM me a copy? I am registered for the site and able to download them except my computer at work won't allow it and I'm going to have some time to work on them this afternoon, thanks!

I lied -- I can't immediately see how to attach a file in a PM and the baby just woke up so I gotta run.
